So my cousin has this single cab 5 lug Tacoma that I've been trying to get him to do something with for a while. He hit me up the other day saying he wants to do something with it soon since he will be off of his probationary period on his career job making good money.

Initially I was telling him to just do long travel like @madtaco461 has on his 5 lug taco. But now I think he want's to do 4wd stuff. Well 5 lugs aren't 4wd and can't easily be converted to 4wd do to the whole front end being much different than a 6 lug Tacoma. I'm thinking SAS would probably be the next best option for him. I just picked up a 4wd R150 trans and a J-shift t-case that I told him he can have if he wants to do 4wd.

Just for discussions sake, if you had a single cab 5-lug Tacoma, what would you do with it?

LT. That's a lot of fucking work for a 5 lug with a gutless motor.

I would definitely go long travel but that's cause i'm a desert rat, it's all about that go fast stuff out here. SAS is probably gonna be his best option though, does he have a daily though?

That's what a turbo is for, right @madtaco461?

He will have a daily before he tears into this one.
I like go-fast stuff just as much as I like the technical stuff, so it's hard for me to decide which I really like better. LT would be fun, but it's really limited to just desert stuff and I'm sure he'll want to come wheeling with me (which half the time requires 4wd). SAS is probably the most versatile option.

SAS on tons and fo-dees. 3/4 link of course...you did say he was making good money
Haha idk about all that. He can afford it, but I highly doubt he wants to spend THAT much time and money on it. I'm thinking (depending on how much he realistically wants to spend), 1/2 ton axles (i.e. D44 or LC80), 37's (short wheelbase doesn't really need 40's), and linked front and rear.

If he wants 4WD with the 5 lug Taco the only practical way to go about it is a SAS. The 5 lugs have different everything up front like you mentioned so other than selling it to buy a similarly priced 6 lug that’s already 4WD, SAS is the only way to keep it and still have 4WD.

If he is really into wrenching, go 5 lug. Depends on how mild to wild he wants to go. 4x just front half the whole truck. I just cut off what I don't like and start over. If I were to go 4wd I'd chop my frame off. Turbo is a headache and eats up a ton of room under the hood. You need to be diehard to want one of those. Just people rarely go that way so that's why my truck is like that.

Yeah that's what I think. I'll have him start his research and see what direction he want's to go. He is pretty smart but doesn't have really any offroad experience, so he is in for a big awakening on how much time, money and effort can go into this hobby.

I doubt he will want to go that far with it and neither do I (I'll be his fabricator most likely).
Daily the truck and get a 3rd gen 4runner
He may go for that, but I doubt he wants to sell the little truck and he probably won't want to keep daily driving it. I think he is buying a newer Tundra soon.
