I usually make a jig and use that if I can.

But I'm a rank amateur.
If I can’t cut it in a straight line I don’t cut it lol. Everything I try to use a straight edge for because I’m shaky then round it with a flap wheel.

Cut some taillights into buddy's deck. Used some tube cutoffs and ran around them. Worked well.

The carpentry experience has made me a big fan of jigs and guides. When I get the chance I'll need to practice up. I have an idea to make steel flares if I get my spot welder. If I do, there'll be lots of jigs for that.

Finally got in the garage tonight for a couple hours and got some things cut and welded. Progress is slow and I'm starting to get annoyed with it but hoping to get a lot done in the morning.
1 of my best welds next to one of my worst welds... Finally figured out the settings for this welder and then it decides it doesn't want to weld and just kept popping on me... Not sure if i should grind it out and re weld or just leave. Its more a cosmetic weld than structural.

Got a rough cut of the bump stop mount and gusset cut out. Plasma cut it with no problem. Just need to work on being steady and running it smooth across the straight edge.

Shock tower tacked in place and started making the bump stop mounts. Should work fine once it’s all boxed in together.

And got the plasma to it’s final home. Used it most the day to cut the bump stop gussets and once I figured out the straight edge it was making super clean straight cuts. I added an inline filter to give it cleaner air and it works well.

Moving right along. Been nice having the plasma. Got all the frame brackets cut after finalizing how i wanted to do everything and zipped them out with the plasma. Got the driver side welded besides the can and the last filler plate and back gusset. Passenger frame plate welded on. Hope to get the passenger side done this week and move onto finishing the axle side bump stop and then burn everything in.

I need some input on how to do the bump stop pad on the axle end. Plan was to make it out of 1.75 tubing with a 2-3" circle out of 1/4". Its pretty tall off the axle tube and not really sure how else to do it.

These 2 pictures show it the best.

Damn dude that fab work looks super clean! I wish I had the patience to clean up all the metal before working on it. what do you use when getting the scale off and down to a smooth sanding? Grinder and DA?

Something new I’m trying. Just a da with like 80 grit paper. The biggest thing that’s helped is dialing in the welder, tracing my weld and using some anti splatter spray. Makes clean up virtually nothing. First time I’ve ever used anti splatter spray and I’m sold.

I’m gonna have to start doing that. Maybe once I find my DA again.
Got a link to that spray you are using? One of the reasons I never had the desire to clean the metal is all the splatter.

Literally the cheapest stuff on Amazon because I’m cheap haha. My stuff used to have a good amount of splatter and always had to use the grinder to clean everything. Now I spray this on everything and haven’t had s problem yet. I’m a dewalt fan boy and got the corded da but I may be going back and getting the cordless one here soon. I love not having to deal with cords running everywhere.
